The Countess and Her Car

These days nothing sends the Northeast into a panic faster than a see of white looming on the weatherman's Dopler radar. This one promises to be a doozy, the hype was big enough to force a rare NYC snow day along with most of Long Island's schools closing before a single flake of snow had fallen.

Along with most of Nassau County, the Countess spent the day in her car. The list of stops was as follows;

Cross Island Fruit

Malverne Deli

Green Acres Mall

Target

Matty's Toy Shop

Entemann's Bakery

Kinkos

Tom's Shoe Repair

School

Dentist with Count Jr.

Friends house to pick up the Contessa

Snow Haus

The Countess is not a car person. Perhaps it was her many years happily using mass transit and her feet to get around her beloved NYC, but the driving thing has never really set her heart racing. But the payoff is a stocked house and everyone fully outfitted for a weekend of skiing.
How did you prepare for the big storm (if at all), and how will you handle the dreaded snow day?

  1. Out in Ohio the storm has brought just about everything to a standstill. No school all over the state. Power outages intermittently occuring--ours on Saturday. Memories of the Christmas storm about 5 years ago are still looming in most people's mind. So going without power for half a day was nothing compared to 10-14 days.
I had stocked up with food and supplies, especially food that didn't require cooking. My brother actually volunteered to take my grocery/drugstore list, go into the big city that is the county seat and do the shopping. Who said that miracles don't happen?
Spread some ice melt on the sidewalks and waited for the fun to begin. When you live in the country, in a town of about 1000 people, in rural Applachian southern Ohio, not much else to do. If I had shopped everystore in town, my list would be the IGA, Family Dollar, the hardware store, the NAPA store, and (saving the best til last) THE HOMEPLACE. Yes, we have Amish and Mennonite families here and they run the Homeplace. Take that Entemann's!
For entertainment, my seven year-old great niece and I re-enacted the Puppy Bowl in her living room. Now known as the "Stuffed Puppy Bowl" complete with kitty half-time, bunny cheerleaders and yes, hamsters driving the blimp. Who knew that stuffed hamsters abound?

  2. OKay, I am always at Cross Island (and the Malverne Theater). Malverne Bakery has the best Tiramisu cake.
