Funny is hard, and writing funny is excruciatingly hard.
I mean look at this bloke, does he look happy? Happy or not, this tortured, bespectacled, contemplative, repressed, self conscious, self righteous, highly educated, painfully hip fellow is the face of Unhappy Hipsters, one of the funniest sites in the blogosphere.
We know them, we hate them, the painfully hip. The people who added the word griege to our lexicon. As pretentious as any one of the Housewives of New Jersey, these preachy, melancholy souls have been begging for smack down and Unhappy Hipsters delivers brilliantly. The premise of Unhappy Hipsters is simple. Devilishly witty writer (Molly Jane Quinn) and her equally witty graphic designer pal (Janna Talbott) combine the allegedly cool yet head-scratchingly odd interiors of that hipster bible Dwell with captions that are a deadpan send up of this often scoff worthy aesthetic.
I present one of my all time favorites as an example;
The violence that had played out on the chalkboard had so shaken him that he meekly resorted to Worcestershire sauce in place of white truffle oil in that night’s marinade.
As a rule any shot featuring hipster spawn is money.
Pink Cat sighed a smug little sigh, content in the knowledge that he’d made a sizable dent in their commitment to gender-neutral parenting.
And then there's this.
Her cloak of invisibility worked far better than she ever imagined.
Everyday readers are treated to a single photo, and an original one sentence caption. It's like the perfect comic-blog hors d'oeuvre. Not to be outdone by the deadpan hilarity of the writers, reader comments are often as funny as posts themselves.
Give yourself a good laugh and go have a look.
